biography of a playboy.Little boy wonder Redford was born on a Indian Summer sort of day on October the third nineteen-seventy to two of the most eclectic parents that ever would be. Born purely into Manhattan royalty, Jim (never James) Redford lived a life that had no bounds and no regulations. The drunken lovechild of a corporate lawyer and a seriously misguided socialite, Jim went to the best schools, got the worst grades and was never given a word to the wise about the importance of education. At ten, he wanted to be a cowboy. So his parents bought him a horse, whom he only named Bilbo and never rode for fear of the thing. At eleven, he wanted to be an astronaut. So, away to space camp he went. His aspirations only went downhill from there. That is until puberty hit and his goals became far more misguided. There was this new phase about town commonly referred to as the other gender.
High school was a daze for the boy; he skipped class and drank liquor straight out of pop’s cabinet. Parties were had and expenses were never spared. Limos, champagne and marijuana smoked in Central Park. His teenage years played out like those not unlike the glorified versions of Prep School wonders with girls in short skirts and uniformed ties, except the dialogue was far more compelling and the plot line resembled that of Harold and Kumar hijinks. Life in New York was fine and when graduation came (with a few bribes to magically make up for his handful of failed marks to just barely passing), it wasn’t too much of a surprise that the Redford boy decided to stay in town. New York was his stomping grounds and he wasn’t about to go somewhere and have to put all that work into concocting his reputation of a ladies man yet again.
Money can buy just about anything and having plenty of it made it easy enough for a buffoon to somehow get himself an acceptance letter to the usually high-regarded New York University. Redford didn’t study much at NYU and finished his education in six years, getting a vague degree that the administration all but concocted to get the nuisance and nay-sayer out of their hair. Of course, Jim (never James) Redford did not leave the institution without a million and one stories in his back pocket. The most popular of which detailing a mutiny lead against the fraternities and their piggish ways. There isn’t really any better way to pick up chicks other then convincing them that women’s lib issues are at the core of your interests. And Jim, well, some could say he cared deeply. Deeply enough to spend a couple thousand dollars on an anti-frat blowout party which ended in a drug-addled streaking past one of the more prestigious houses on a Sunday morning brunch much to the dismay of the church-going grandmas and grandpas that were there for the annual visit day (an event that the soon-to-be-arrested revolutionary was well aware of).
NYU fully conquered and with the whole of the Big Apple at his feet, Redford set out for a few adventures following his rather unceremonious graduation. Hopping a plane with little less then a pack of smokes and a fifth of Jack (security having confiscated the shrooms he tried to pass off as an ‘south American candy’), Redford found Amsterdam to his liking and stayed several months in a hotel before trip hopping across the rest of the globe. Once the travel gig got sour, he headed back to the Big Apple and rehashed old friendships for quite some time and lived a life between the two lives, loving his NY life as well as bouncing around the Caribbean, Eastern and Western Europe as well as the party cities of South America with a whole slew of different names and different women. The international playboy made a name for himself and soon found the attention to be a little bit too much. Sure, he reveled in the spot light for a while, but once he became an international press ticket for carousing with cover models, Redford claimed he was heading back to the US in search of ‘meaning.’ He was barely thirty then and decided to pool his massive amounts of wealth into a more meaningful endeavor; film. And, of course, when Jim made the announcement of his endeavor into the field half the world knew that this would end in one particular genre. Soft-core porn. Throwing himself whole-heartedly into the business, he claimed to have found his calling for several years and supported several productions with Howard Hughes fervor before tiring of the actual work involved.
After said dive into such a lucrative career-if one could call it that, Redford disappeared for a few years. No one knew exactly where his whereabouts were and speculation all around the press circuit wondered if he’d been killed, the mob perhaps? Or maybe he’d decided to pull a Rimbaud and become a recluse in Africa. No one really knew. The truth was, of course, that Redford was just hiding out in one of his families many mansions. He’d been rushing to places for so long, that he decided that places should then rush to him. Friends and fun were flown in for a few years and Jim liked to think of himself as Gatsby with a little bit more game.
Tiring of the recluse life, Jim came out of hiding with a bang for a while as he threw big parties and even bigger headlines with new and improved New York City rumors. He hit the scene again and was his old self for a long while again. From then on, he bounced around doing what he wanted and considered all sorts of jobs, spending freely and flying solo. Now living in a big old hillside mansion, Jim lives a similar life. He likes to say he’s there to expand his mind and become a better person, but the truth is his libido is static as ever and his impulsive, no-limits motto isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. He wouldn't admit it, but things are looking a little bit bleak and lonely as of late.
obligatory questionnaire. What is your character's current situation? What do they want?:Jim Redford is currently living in a very large hillside mansion. He’s got plenty of staff around and spends most of his time loafing around or being the over-the-top play boy that he has always been throughout his years in New York. Being in California is particularly convenient for him, because the big city New York gossip doesn’t seem to reach him. As of right now he is relatively happy (or at least has himself convinced that he’s content) and won’t exactly admit that he wants much of anything. Truth be told, Jim’s getting pretty lonely nowadays and certainly would like nothing more then a few more genuine friends and maybe a chance or two to step up and be a man, rather then this persona he has concocted for himself. What conflicts are they facing?:Age is really the key thing here and as Jim gets older each year, his situation is quickly becoming a bit more played out and a bit more pathetic. There’s really not all that much wrong with being a party-mongering slut at twenty-five or even thirty, but now at thirty-eight the life seems rather dismal. Its hard to get one’s bearings in such a world and as he gets older (though he’d be the last to admit it), that seemingly cliché life of a family-or at least a steady relationship-really becomes more and more appealing. Trick is, how does one exactly go about changing? And is it worth it? His settled down, mature friends don’t seem to have half as much fun as Redford does. This worries him. What are their conscious motivations?:What any other man’s motivations are, so pretty much sex is front and center. Jim hasn’t ever really had to be motivated to do much of anything. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and its been there all of his life. His father’s very lucrative (and probably very shady) law firm has raked in enough cash to keep Jim’s life where it is for a very, very long time. That on top of the money he made with his little stint in the adult film industry keeps him quite wealthy. So, he works to keep that rich boy image up and he does a fine job with parties, women, booze, cars and a few more women. What are their subconscious motivations?:Subconsciously, Jim’s a bit of a mess. He’s always been a bit spoiled, a bit childish and has never really had any hard times or had to work for much of anything. So, one might argue that his life has never had all that much meaning. He’s never been too great at anything or particularly great to anyone at all. With all this becoming clearer as time goes on, Jim’s sort of looking for that meaning. All the women? That’s definitely part of it. The move to California was a new start for him and he sort of tried to reform in a sense, but it didn’t work out too well. So, he’s a bit disappointed in himself from time to time, but he shines on like its all good in the hood. What factors have significantly influenced them in the past?: Being the rich kid that he was, Jim's past is not exactly riddled with hardtimes and responsibility. He's always gotten what he wanted with little to no effort. His life has pretty much stayed the same way. Basically raised by nannies and brought up to value certain things (mainly money and reputation), Jim's big into flaunting his wealth and isn't the best at relating to others when it comes to, well, work. He just plain has no common ground there. What factors are significantly influencing them now?:The fact that Jim is getting older is seriously starting to get to him. He won't admit it, but it sort of scares the hell out of him that he's thirty-eight and still living the way he does. He's never had a career, had very few short serious relationships and hasn't exactly yet learned how to operate in the adult world. Its a bit shameful, but he doesn't really talk about it. He'd sort of like some meaning in his life, but he hasn't a clue where to find it. How do they see themselves?: Never taking himself too seriously, Jim tends to see himself as a laid back and relaxed sort of fellow. He goes with the flow, c'est la vie and carpe diem. Jim doesn't see himself as too arrogant and cocky. He's well aware that he acts the nut sometimes, but he pretty much enjoys never being seriousl. Life's short and there's no room to pout. How do others see them?: Depending on who's asking, people tend to love or hate Jim. Those who know him well tend to be fond of the follow, because when up close and personal Jim is a great friend, generous and rather amusing. He'd do anything for his friends and he's a pretty great guy, though a bit crazy. Charming when he wants to be, Jim tends to be a hit with the ladies and certainly has earned a reputation in that respect. Still, many people who don't know Jim all too well see him for his money and that's it. They assume he's an evil arrogant prick and dismiss him right off the bat. Its the curse, perhaps, of the rich and fabulous. What are some of their hopes and fears?: Jim's never been a high hopes sort of guy. What could exactly a man accomplish besides amass the wealth he was born into? World domination? That'd be a bit too much work for our lazy play boy. No, Jim wasn't born with his eyes on the prize. That being said, he really wouldn't mind trying out a different sort of life. A serious relationship or two. Maybe even try his hand at investing in something besides a party or his friend's tab at the bar. He sort of wishes and hopes that something big and better is coming along. Respectively, he's also sort of terrified that something big and better will come along. Jim's a good buy, sure, but trying to navigate anything serious (be it business, relationship or watching a tasteful movie with subtitles) scares him to death. He's never been that guy, so how does one become that guy? storylines IN NEED OF; east coast homies, women to offend, women to not offend, women to never call back, a few bromances, wing men, wing women, wing anything, a butler? and maybe a stooge to introduce into the life of playboydom. oh and, your mom.
